Why Do You Need To Track Conversions & How To Implement Conversion Tracking

When first setting up your AdWords account, you will need to find a way to work out if it is a successful marketing channel for you or not.

The best way to determine this is to implement some form of conversion tracking.

Depending on what kind of business you have, a ‘conversion’ could be anything from someone making a purchase on your website, to someone picking up the phone and calling you. Whatever it is, AdWords enables you to track this activity so you can monitor if these people are coming to you from your AdWords ads or not. Therefore, you can work out (to the actual dollar amount!) if your money is well spent. Pretty good huh!

The good news is that setting up conversion tracking is super easy to do and there are actually a few ways to do this.

Tracking Conversions Through AdWords Interface

The first way is through the AdWords interface. This is a pretty straightforward process and we will walk you through the process below.

From within the Google AdWords interface, you will need to click on Tools -> Conversions (shown below)

Then you will have to click the red button “+conversion”

And then you will be faced with the following steps.

conversions steps

Here, depending on what you are trying to track, either a website purchase, eBook download, or phone call, you will fill in the details. It will then give you tracking code for you to put on your website. Make sure you place this code on the right page of your website. For example, if you are tracking a website purchase, make sure you put the code on the final checkout page. The last thing you want to be doing is recording conversions if they have not taken place.

Tracking Conversions Through Google Tag Manager

Another way is through the Google Tag Manager. This is our preferred method for a few reasons, but primarily as it is really easy to debug. If you are interested in the Google Tag Manager and our thoughts on it, you can read about here. For what it is worth, we LOVE it!

But we made a quick video for you on how to implement AdWords conversion tracking code through the Google Tag Manager below.
